Experience: This is my first bike and I have been riding for a month.
Bikes Owned: 1
Accessories: I purchased this bike used through a local dealer that sells used bikes. The bike appears to be completely stock. I am trying to find out more about them.
Modifications: First week of June 1999 I installed a K&N Jet kit. First time I ever did anything like this. I installed the 140 jets and changed the needles. With these jets, I am running with the airbox cover off and stock pipe. I will be putting the cover back on when I install aftermarket pipe. Any suggestions?
Problems: Seems to be a little hesitation when taking off in first gear. But overall the jet kit seems to have made an improvement in throttle response especialy in 2nd and 3rd gears. Needs some paint work and the fork needs to be polished for starters.
Comments:
If anyone can give insight on these bikes on history, modifications and how to's, It would help very much.

Location: UK -- LONDON (Surrey), ENGLAND.
Experience: 7 YEARS, PART-TIME INSTRUCTOR and boring fart know-it-all !
Bikes Owned: 2
Accessories: RC-31 DECALS. SMALL (BUT LEGAL) NUMBER PLATE.
Modifications: TWO BROTHERS RACING EXHAUST (RIGHT EXIT OVAL ALLOY) - STAGE 1 DYNAJET KIT - K&N AIR FILTER - METZELER MEZ1 RADIAL TYRES (110/70 FRONT AND 160/60 REAR) - BRAIDED STEEL BRAKE HOSES - HIGH OUTPUT HEADLAMP BULB! - IT SOUNDS LIKE A DUCATI, IT GOES, IT STICKS, IT STOPS AND I CAN SEE - WHAT MORE DOES A GUY NEED!? THE ONLY DISADVANTAGE OF THE LOWER PROFILE METZ's IS THAT THE ROLLING RADIUS OF THE TYRES IS VERY SLIGHTLY LESS THAN THE STANDARD FITMENT. THIS MEANS THAT THE SPEEDO OVER-READS BY ABOUT 5 PERCENT (AND THE MILEOMETER) - BUT IT DOES IMPROVE THE ACCELERATION A SMIDGE! I'VE ALSO HOT-WIRED THE FAN TO A SWITCH (MORE ABOUT THAT BELOW). I BOUGHT IT WITH SLIGHTLY HIGHER AND WIDER BARS THAN THE STANDARD CLIP-ON's (AT LEAST, MOST BROS's I SEE HAVE CLIP-ON's) WHICH IS EASIER ON THE WRISTS IN TOWN AND MAKES QUICK EVASIVE MANOEUVRES USING BAR PRESSURE MORE EFFECTIVE. EVERYTHING ELSE STOCK, SO FAR. (WHY SPOIL A GOOD THING?)
Problems: NOTHING THAT HAS EVER LEFT ME STRANDED - THIS SUPERB LITTLE TOOL IS ABSOLUTELY BULLETPROOF AND MORE RELIABLE THAN MY VOLKSWAGEN! IN MY OPINION, TWO OF THE MANY GREAT THINGS ABOUT THE HAWK IS THAT THERE IS NO EXPENSIVE FAIRING TO REPLACE IF YOU CRUNCH IT AND IT IS LIGHT ENOUGH TO PICK UP AGAIN IF YOU DROP IT. I'VE ONLY THROWN MINE DOWN THE ROAD ONCE, WHEN I LOST THE FRONT END AT ABOUT 50MPH ON ONE OF OUR MUDDY COUNTRY ROADS. I MANAGED TO STAY WITH IT FOR SEVERAL TANK-SLAPS, BUT SHE THREW ME OFF AT ABOUT 30MPH AND ONLY THE BRAKE LEVER SNAPPED - ALTHOUGH GENEROUSLY LEAVING ME ENOUGH LEVER TO BRAKE USING TWO FINGERS, SO I COULD RIDE SEDATELY TO THE NEAREST BIKE SHOP TO REPLACE IT! MINE IS A CALIFORNIA MODEL, SO IT HAS A CRUDE EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM ON IT WHICH RE-DIRECTS UNBURNT FUEL AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST AND BACK TO THE CYLINDERS. I'VE RIDDEN A STOCK BROS, WITH MUCH LOWER MILEAGE, BUT IT DIDN'T SEEM ANY QUICKER SO I GUESS THE EMISSIONS CONTROL HARDLY SAPS ANY POWER. I'VE SUFFERED ONE DRY SOLDER JOINT ON THE IGNITION - EASILY FIXED - AND OCCASIONALLY THE ENGINE GETS A LITTLE HOT IN GRIDLOCKED TRAFFIC, SO I 'HOT-WIRED' A SMALL SWITCH AND MOUNTED IT ON THE PLASTIC COWL ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RADIATOR. NOW IF THE TEMP CREEPS UP I CAN MANUALLY ACTIVATE THE FAN UNTIL TRAFFIC STARTS MOVING AGAIN. AT AROUND 85,000 MILES IT HAD NEW WHEEL BEARINGS, HEADSTOCK BEARINGS AND FORK SEALS. I CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES OR SO, AND IT HARDLY USES ANY! THE CHAIN AND SPROCKETS LOOKED QUITE NEW WHEN I BOUGHT IT AND SO FAR HAVE NOT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT! MY TIP IS TO AVOID THE LOW REV V-TWIN JUDDER ON PULL AWAY, AVOID ENGINE LUGGING AND CHAIN-LASH, AND REGULARLY LUBE THE CHAIN WITH PJ1 (BEST APPLIED TO THE INSIDE OF THE CHAIN AND DONE THE NIGHT BEFORE A RIDE, SO THE SOLVENT HAS TIME TO EVAPORATE AND IT DOESN'T FLING OFF ALL OVER THE REAR CYLINDER AND REAR TYRE). MAYBE AS A RESULT OF JUDDER-FREE PULL AWAYS, THE CLUTCH HAS RECENTLY STARTED TO SLIP A BIT, BUT ONLY WHEN I GRAB A BIG HANDFUL OF THROTTLE, AND USUALLY IN 4TH OR 5TH WHEN THE TORQUE WINS OVER THE DRAG AT 80MPH PLUS (I'M NOT AS AERODYNAMIC AS I USED TO BE!). I ALSO SUSPECT THAT THE CLUTCH SPRINGS ARE A LITTLE TIRED! THE REAR SHOCK IS WOUND FULL UP BUT IS GETTING A BIT TOO BOUNCY, SO THAT AND THE CLUTCH ARE MY HAWK's NEXT TREAT (update 3/99: new clutch now installed) THE PAINTWORK AND ALUMINIUM STILL LOOK SUPERB - ONLY A FEW BOLT-HEADS HAVE CORRODED, BUT ALL IN ALL FOR A BIKE WITH 96,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK, WHICH LIVES OUTDOORS, ENDURING OUR HARSH BRITISH WEATHER, IT WOULD BE RUDE TO WHINGE ABOUT SUCH MINOR NIGGLES!
Comments:
HUBBAH HUBBAH! AN ABSOLUTE HOOT! WITH MEZ1's IT DEFIES GRAVITY! EVERYONE SHOULD FIT MEZ1's - THEY'RE STUNNING, AND LOOK GREAT ON THE HAWK! A TAD CRAMPED FOR A SIX-FOOTER ON A LONG TRIP, BUT I'M NOT ABOUT TO TRADE SHEER ENTERTAINMENT FOR COMFORT! I'VE RIDDEN MANY BIKES BUT CAN THINK OF FEW SO COMPLETE AS THE HAWK. SURELY ONE OF THE BEST LITTLE BIKES EVER MADE (A MATE HAS A BMW R1100GS MONSTER-TRAILIE WITH ABS AND ALL THE CREATURE COMFORTS, WHICH IS ALSO A SUPERB BIKE, EXCEPT FOR THAT CRAZY SWITCHGEAR - AND THE FACT THAT IT'S A BEEMER!) THE HAWK's TANK RANGE IS ONLY JUST ADEQUATE, BUT AFTER 100 MILES OR SO MY BUM'S NUMB, AND A LARGER ONE WOULD SPOIL THE LOOKS AND HANDLING (TANK, THAT IS, NOT BUM!). THERE ARE MANY MORE BROS's THAN HAWK's IN THE UK. WHY HONDA UK NEVER IMPORTED THEM OFFICIALLY BAFFLES ME! THE UK GOT THE 'REVERE' WHICH WAS EVENTUALLY UPPED FROM 600cc TO 650cc AND CALLED THE NTV650. STEEL FRAME, SHAFT DRIVE, BIGGER TANK - FUNCTIONAL, AND A DESPATCHERS DELIGHT, BUT VERY, VERY BLAND COMPARED TO THE HAWK. IT'S ALSO MUCH HEAVIER! IN FACT, YAWNINGLY DULL BY COMPARISON! SUFFICE TO SAY THAT EVERY DAY THE VERY SIGHT OF MY HAWK BRINGS JOY TO MY HEART - AND THEN I GET TO RIDE IT! IT'S FLICKABILITY AND GRUNT GIVE ME THE HORN! I RATE IT'S HANDLING OVER MY GIRLFRIEND'S VFR-400, WHICH IS GUTLESS BELOW 7K AND ALSO SOUNDS LIKE A SEWING MACHINE - NO, A FOOD BLENDER (DON'T TELL HER I SAID SO!) I'M THINKING ABOUT BUYING A VTR1000 FOR EVEN MORE GRUNT AND GRIN-CITY ENTERTAINMENT AND FOR SERIOUS TOURING, BUT I'M ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, DEFINITELY KEEPING THE HAWK. I'LL PROBABLY KEEP USING IT TO BRIGHTEN UP AN OTHERWISE BORING AND CONGESTED COMMUTE TO WORK. YOU ALL KNOW HOW PEACHY A TRAFFIC BIKE IT IS, BEING LIGHT, NIMBLE AND NARROW, WITH OODLES OF TORQUE. I LEAVE MY MATE AND HIS KAWASAKI GPZ900 FOR DEAD IN RUSH-HOUR - IT'S FUN TO WATCH HIM FURIOUSLY SLAMMING IT DOWN A FEW COGS TO KEEP UP - EVEN THOUGH HE PASSES ME LIKE A GUIDED-MISSILE ON THE OPEN STRAIGHTS! THE WORDS 'TORTOISE' AND 'HARE' SPRING TO MIND! NUFF SAID! SAFE AND HAPPY HAWKING ALL YOU HAWKSTERS. GET A DECENT LID, RIDE WITH STYLE, NEVER LOSE YOUR NERVE, TRY NOT TO HUMILIATE THE POOR MISERABLE BUGGERS STUCK IN THEIR TIN-BOXES, OR TERRORISE THE MUM'S AND THE OLDIES, . . . AND WATCH OUT FOR THOSE BLOODY VOLVO's!!! (Well, I'm glad I got all that off my chest! Who said Instructors talk too much? Really glad I discovered this site, but the rest of you probably aren't!! HEY you kids - do as I SAY and not as I DO! We work as a team and we do it MY way! Blah Blah Blah . . .)
For Sale: SELL? IT WOULD BE A COLD DAY IN HELL! (WHICH, BY THE WAY, SEEMS SOMEWHAT MORE APPEALING THAN A COLD DAY IN ENGLAND!)

I BROUGHT THIS BIKE NEW IN A CRATE IN MARCH OF 1989. THE MILEAGE IS LOW BECAUSE I WALKED TO WORK FOR THE PAST 9 OUT OF 10 YEARS (ONE MILE). I LOVE THIS BIKE AND WOULD NOT SELL IT EVEN IF I BROUGHT A NEW BIKE. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON SOLVING THE RIGHT WRIST TINGLES? I PUT ON 120 MILES TODAY AND IF THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT, THEN LIFE IS GOOD!

Comments:
I love my hawk, the newer bikes are cool, but have yet ot capture the style and look of the Hawk! I bought mine new in 1993, for $3500.00 with full warantee. Deal of the century, or should I say steal. I crashed once at about 90mph, I was hurt worse than the bike, thank god for no body work! It slid on the handlebar and foot peg causing only minor scratches. I would like to get a new bike soon, but parting with my Hawk would be too difficult, If I could only convince my wife I need two bikes!!

I've thought about buying another bike and selling my 650gt but I can't do it. I've built this bike from (literally) salvage. Surprisingly, the body was straight and the engine wasn't fried. I should have started the mods years ago, instead I made it stock. Now, a couple years later and a little neglect from working on my car too much...I can't keep my paws off of my hawk! Long live Hawksters! Oh yea, watch out, take care, it is crazy out there in the city! I'm looking for people who like to bullshit about mods.....email.

Best handling bike I have ever owned or ridden. Very exclusive cult-like following not only makes parts easier to find, but also provides huge shortcuts to maintence issues. A Hawk has everything you could ever want minus fuel-injection. The "new" bikes don't even have all of the features that a Hawk came with STOCK 11 years ago. This bike rocks!

Comments:
Great bike but I've gained too much weight for 647cc. I'm an ex jet wrench and have maintained and modified my Hawk myself since it was new. All my work has been FAA sano.
For Sale: For sale, see above, must sacrafice, make offer Bret

i just got this bike and man am i in love haven't pick up the front wheel yet but the torque is there for it. my second time out was on a sunday morning and i pulled up to a light and there was an MuZ scorpion 660 i reved my engein he reved his and it was on ... i walked a way from him so smoothly it was sweat as hell. i waited for him at the next stop sign he pulled up real close and ask what was my displacement when i said 650 he frowed, he was quiet disapointed in his bike, ha! well anotherone bites the dust.... watch out for thoughs pesky white vans you've been warned. heres how it all went down i am driving along after doing an ajustment to my clutch and i am just a block away from my house. i am coming through this trun takeing it easy b/c i was not sure if the mod was working and i see this big old white van sitting there in her lan just doing nothing needless to say it looked devious so i slowed down considerably. as i get about 10 ft away she (the driver that is) desides to pull into the ally next to her house but b/c she had been talking to her husband who was watering the lawn she was not looking and then i was flying throught the air with the greatest of ease but there was nothing waiting to catch me except the ground...smack. i hit hard busted my wrist and collor (sp?) i was in the hospital for day and was out of school for a week. it could have been worse i have heard the stories so i am thankful. as far as this hawk goees it is up in the air i dout the insurance company wants to pay $3000 to fix it up so my bet is that i get some cash for it and start looking for another one i'll keep you all posted....the bike was totaled so if anyone picks up this vin bewarened that in the eyes of the state of florida this bike is not road worthy and if you are buying it something funny went on... last post for this bike

I polished the wheels, footrest mounts, headlight brackets, and rear hub. The polished aluminum looks pretty sharp against the blue pieces. The lower fork tubes and engine cases get polished next. The bike gets better and better looking the longer my wife (red hawk) and I own it. I am always looking for more of the painted and aluminum pieces. We have always been drawn to light, great handling bikes. Other bikes in this class that my wife or I have owned are the FT500, RD350, NX650, the 500cc Triumph Daytona, and the MuZ Scorpion Tour. We took both Hawks to California in the back of our Chev. Astro Van. They fit very well. We hope to do the same this year. The longest daily mileage we have done on the Hawks is 400 to 500 miles. That we haven't done more is a reflection of our age. If we were in our twenties, we'd be riding the Hawks all over the country and doing 700 miles a day.
